Del Potro Withdraws From Toronto

Juan Martin del Potro's troublesome left wrist has forced him out of Toronto.

The fourth-ranked Argentinian officially withdrew from the Rogers Cup today citing the need to rest his surgically-repaired wrist.

Zverev: Why I'll Quit

Del Potro is hoping rest will help his wrist in advance of Cincinnati and the US Open later this month.

Mikhail Youzhny has replaced del Potro in the Rogers Cup draw and will face Robin Haase, who knocked off Kei Nishikori.

Four wrist surgeries did more than curtail del Potro's career.

Chronic wrist pain caused the 2009 US Open champion to consider quitting tennis.

"Yes, yes, I consider it, like, three years ago to quit tennis, to stop to play, because I had been suffering a lot," del Potro told the media his Toronto pre-tournament press conference. "I was depressed for a couple of months because I couldn't find a way to fix the wrist problems."

Del Potro met depression with defiance and worked for years to strengthen his wrist and craft career resurrection.

The Indian Wells champion arrived at the Rogers Cup equaling his career-best ranking of No. 4. Del Potro has won 12 of his last 15 matches, including runs to the Roland Garros semifinals, Wimbledon quarterfinals and Los Cabos final where he fell to Fabio Fognini.

The depression he felt over persistent wrist pain turned to cautious elation as the 29-year-old Argentinian is playing what he calls "my best tennis ever."

"Now you can imagine how happy I am playing tennis again and being in the top five position again after long time, winning titles, playing my best tennis ever maybe," del Potro said in Toronto the day before his withdrawal. "I'm having one of my best season this year, and it's amazing.

"I never expect to be in this moment again after all my problems. So I just want to keep enjoying this second chance of the tennis life."

Hopefully, del Potro's latest wrist issue is not a major setback.
