Stephens: No Freak Outs

Winning a Grand Slam title has not only boosted Sloane Stephens' confidence, it's soothed her nerves as well.

Stephens squandered a 5-1 second-set lead today, but maintained her composure conquering Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-2, 7-6, to reach the Montreal quarterfinals.

Zverev: Why I'll Quit

The reigning US Open champion said in the past, she may well have freaked out, but not today.

"She called her coach at 5-2. She played two really good games," Stephens said. "It kind of just gets away from you. I don't think it was a matter of, like, holy hell, it's going to shit. Oh, sorry.

"Yeah, it's just like a couple of good games that she played. Like I said, maybe the old me would have kind of freaked out. I was kind of, like, Okay, it's fine, she's allowed to play well. Just kind of regroup. I did that. I was happy with that."

The third-seeded Stephens will face Anastasija Sevastova for a semifinal spot. Sevastova stopped 10th-seeded Julia Goerges, 6-3, 7-6 (2).
