Second Serve

Andy Murray is exhausted. Andy Murray is overjoyed. Andy Murray is a wreck. A beautiful wreck, who also happens to be into his first quarterfinal in over a year after defeating Romania’s Marius Copil, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(4) at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. in a match that took over three hours and ended after 3 A.M.

And yes, you can see what it meant to Murray below.

The match didn’t get underway until midnight because rains had delayed the start of play in D.C. for several hours. By the time 1 A.M. rolled around Murray found himself in a hole after Copil reeled off seven straight points to take the first set tiebreaker.

But Murray would gather himself and even though at times it looked like he was really suffering physically (especially after he was broken back for 4-3 in the third set when it looked like he might take the set in uncomplicated fashion), he soldiered through.

Here’s the match point and handshake that prefaced the emo moment in his chair.

If he has any energy left, Murray will move on to face Alex de Minaur in Friday’s last quarterfinal at the Citi Open.

The other three quarterfinals shape up as follows:

David Goffin vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas
Alexander Zverev vs. Kei Nishikori
Denis Kudla vs. Andrey Rublev
