WTT Recap: Playoffs Set as New York Empire Snag Final Berth


The World Team Tennis Playoffs are set for Friday in Las Vegas.

The New York Empire handed the Philadelphia Freedoms their first home loss and snagged the fourth and final playoff berth with a 21-16 win on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena. Mardy Fish played a huge hand in the Empires victory by winning double with Neal Skupski and taking singles over Mitchell Krueger.

Kirsten Flipkens took out Taylor Townsend 5-3 to clinch the win for New York.


The teams will meet again in Friday at Vegas.

Friday’s WTT Semifinals features reigning WTT champion and No. 2 seed Springfield (Mo.) Lasers vs. 2016 WTT champ and No. 3 seed San Diego Aviators at 4 p.m. PT, followed by regular season champion Philadelphia Freedoms vs. No. 4 seed New York Empire at 7 p.m. PT.

WTT Semifinals and WTT Final airs live and exclusively on CBS Sports Network.

The entire WTT Finals Weekend will air live and exclusively on CBS Sports Network, with Friday’s WTT semifinals taking place at 4 p.m. PT (local time) and 7 p.m. PT and Saturday’s WTT Final airing at 7 p.m. PT. Jason Knapp and analyst Sam Groth will call the WTT Playoffs action, with Olivia Dekker and Nick Gismondi serving as sideline reporters, and guest analyst Katrina Adams and lifestyle reporter Shaun T also contributing to the telecasts.
