Kei Nishikori has tested negative for Covid-19, but the former US Open runner-up has decided to skip the 2020 US Open saying that he does not have time to get fit for the best-of-five format at the Open, which begins on Monday.

“I am happy to announce that I have tested negative for Covid,” wrote Nishikori on his app, Keisapp.com. “I will slowly pick up my practice schedule tomorrow. Having said that, I have decided to skip the US Open this year. After such a long break I feel that returning in a best of five long-match setting is not smart until I am fully ready to do so.”

Nishikori plans to start on the clay, in Kitzbuhel, which begins before Roland Garros, on 8 September.
