Second Serve

It wasn't the comeback performance she was hoping for, but it was a start for Jelena Dokic, who lost to Jarmila Gajdosova in the first round of the Australian Open wildcard playoffs Monday - her first match in 20 months.

The 30-year-old Dokic last played professionally on April 2, 2012, at Charleston, retiring midway through the first set with a wrist injury that kept her off the court until this week.

Dokic climbed all the way to No. 4 in the world in singles and No. 10 in doubles in 2002. She finished two seasons (2001, 2002) in the Top 10 in singles.

Gajdosova defeated her 6-2, 6-4, needing only about 60 minutes.

Dokic has said in multiple interviews that she considered retirement due to the severity of her injury. Gajdosova is also coming off a long layoff, playing just one tournament in the past eight months because of mononucleosis.
