Bouchard on Sumyk: “He’s What I Wanted”

Speaking to the media at the WTA Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium, top seed and world No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard tells media while she’s not planning to overhaul her game with new coach Sam Sumyk, she will be making changes “here and there.”

Bouchard, who announced the hiring last week while in Canada, says that it was her fitness trainer, Scott Byrnes, who helped facilitate the connection with the man who coached Victoria Azarenka for five years and led the Belarussian to two Grand Slam titles and the No. 1 ranking.

"My fitness trainer, Scott [Byrnes], has been friends with Sam for a while now,” Bouchard said, according to WTAtennis.com. “They've both been on tour for a while. After the Australian Open was done, Scott found out that Sam wasn't going to be working with Vika anymore, and he suggested we meet. The rest is history.”

Bouchard told media that she has great respect for all that Sumyk has accomplished.

"I really respect him as a coach - he's done great things,” said Bouchard. “Nothing is guaranteed, but I hope he can help me improve and help me reach my goals … When I was looking for a coach I wanted someone who's played or who's been coaching someone who'd been there, getting to No.1 or winning Grand Slams, and he's done that. He's what I wanted."

But she hinted that she feels her game does not need to change too much in order to reach the next level of success on tour. Still, she admits, she brought in the Frenchman to help her improve, and she’ll be open to making changes.

“I'm keeping my game style,” Bouchard said. “Each coach has their own philosophy and their own ideas. I want to keep playing the aggressive way I like to play, but we'll be changing a few things here and there. I'm always trying to improve, and that's the point of a new coach - hearing a new voice."
