The Swiss Tennis Federation has announced that the Defending Davis Cup champions will trudge on without their top two players at next month’s Davis Cup tie in Belgium.

Roger Federer, who announced his ATP schedule last week, will also skip next month’s Sony Open in Miami. He was first to pull the plug on the upcoming tie, and Stan Wawrinka followed suit a few days ago.

Wawrinka, who has been a regular participant in the international team tennis competition even when Federer was frequently absent due to his extremely busy Grand Slam schedule, said the following in a statement:

"After many weeks of consideration I regret to announce that I will not play this tie. After being a member of the team for over 11 years I decided for the first time in my career to not play a Davis Cup tie," he said. "It is always a total honor for me to play for Switzerland and I was happy to be part of the unbelievable team, who won the Davis Cup in 2014.

“2014 was a very intense and long year full of emotions and fantastic moments … This decision is for the first round only and I will reassess at a later stage when I will return to the team."

In other Davis Cup news, injured Argentine Juan Martin del Potro says he is looking forward to returning to the fold for his country as soon as he becomes healthy enough to do so.

"The team captain [Daniel Orsanic] knows he can count on me. I hope this return lasts for many years," he said.
