Second Serve

Tennis fans generally recognize Gael Monfils for his show-stopping athleticism, momentary lapses of shot-selection reasoning (otherwise known as "genius") and the certain “je ne sais quoi” that the Frenchman has made his calling card over the course of his professional career.

After today we can add random acts of kindness and sportsmanship to those credentials. Watch (see video above) as Monfils, in the process of being blitzed by hard-serving Tomas Berdych in Rotterdam, shows the decency to look out for the burly Czech after he takes a hard fall early in the second set of their battle.

There are many who have questioned the sanity of the Frenchman, who often chooses entertainment in matches over more rational, prudent tactics, over the years. But nobody can question Monfils’ sportsmanship after today.

Berdych won the match, 6-1, 6-4, but Monfils won a lot of respect with his sportsmanship on Friday.
