Deception is an oft underrated part of tennis: If an opponent can’t decipher what is coming from the other side of the net, he or she will have a very difficult time with another oft underrated facet of the game: Anticipation.

Gael Monfils took deception to another level today at the ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, going with the basketball inspired no-look dropper to fool Edouard Roger Vasselin during his 6-3, 6-2 victory over the qualifier.

Was Roger Vasselin fooled by Monfils’ fake? From the video it’s hard to tell, but the end result—and error from ERV—is hard to argue with.

Monfils moves on to the second round in Rotterdam where he will face Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.

In other action on Tuesday at the ABN Amro, defending champion Tomas Berdych eased by Tobias Kamke, 6-1, 7-5, while second-seeded Milos Raonic survived a difficult encounter with Russian Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5.

Raonic will face Italian Simone Bolelli in round two.
