Second Serve

He came, he saw, he conquered.

Dominic Thiem stretched his win streak to eight on Friday at the Rio Open, defeating defending champion David Ferrer 6-3, 6-2 to book his spot in the semifinals.

It was a majestic performance for Thiem, who won eleven of the final 13 games against the indefatigable Spaniard and completely wrestled control of the match from Ferrer after falling behind by a break in the early going.

Thiem faced break points in each of his first three service games but shored up his serve and took control of the baseline from Ferrer as well as the match wore on. In the second set, Thiem only dropped four points on serve and he converted two of his six break points to finish on the sprint.

The 22-year-old, who is the youngest player in the ATP’s top-20, will face Argentina’s Guido Pella in the semifinals. He has won four titles in his career—all of them on clay—including last week’s title at Buenos Aires.

Saturday’s other semifinal will feature Rafael Nadal vs. Pablo Cuevas.
