Serena: Fed Cup Stakes Flag for Tennis

Serena Williams carries an undefeated Fed Cup singles record into this weekend's Fed Cup qualifier tie vs. Latvia.

Team USA faces Latvia for the first time in its first Fed Cup tie in Washington state at Angel Of The Winds Arena in Everett, Washington.

More: Fed Cup's Season of Change

Opening day features three Grand Slam champions as Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin meets 2018 US Open semifinalist Anastasija Sevastova followed by 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena vs. 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in their first meeting.

Williams, who holds a 13-0 career Fed Cup singles record, says taking tennis to new states is vital for the growth of the game.

"It's definitely important, especially in the United States," Willims said. "There's only a few tournaments in selective states. In particular women's tennis does not get to play in a lot of areas.

"That's one thing that is exciting about Fed Cup, is we can go to states, parts of the country that it's not represented. People that are fans of tennis in all the 50 states have an opportunity to see it. It's really cool to expand that."
