We don’t generally think of David Ferrer a stand-up comic—it’s usually Novak Djokovic or Ernests Gulbis that fill that role for the ATP—but Ferrer got his sense of humor going after taking down Gilles Simon, 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(4), on Day 6.

Skip ahead to 1:15 in the interview to hear Ferrer field questions about his bloodied right foot. “I am okay,” jokes Ferrer. “Don’t worry about me, I am perfect.”
Later in the interview the conversation shifts to Ferrer’s round of 16 opponent, Kei Nishikori. Ferrer keeps the jokes coming here, saying “Now I want to rest. I don’t want to think about Kei Nishikori now.”
It’s a normal, run-of-the-mill statement, but Ferrer’s delivery, and the crowd’s reaction, is what makes it Grade “A” comedic material.
Ferrer is now into the round of 16 for a fifth straight year in Melbourne. The Spaniard owns a 3-6 lifetime mark against Nishikori and has lost their last four meetings, all in four sets. No wonder he doesn’t want to think about him…
