Winning the Australian Open is no day at the beach.

Pounding the sand of Miami Beach helped formed Andy Murray's fitness foundation for his fifth trip to the Australian Open semifinals. The sixth-ranked Scot provides a glimpse of his training regimen and his early-season goals in this video produced by his racquet sponsor, Head.

Murray says the back surgery he underwent in September, 2013 was necessary, but the subsequent rehab and recovery time set him back a bit.

"When I had the surgery [it] was unfortunate, the timing of it, because I was competing at the end of all the major tournaments," Murray, an Australian Open finalist, Wimbledon champion and U.S. Open quarterfinalist in 2013. "To get back up there it takes time and I hope with a good training block and preparation I'll be ready at the beginning of the year."

The three-time finalist's semifinal against Tomas Berdych carries the additional intrigue of Murray's former coach and long-time friend, Dani Vallverdu, now in the Czech's corner.

Berdych, who has won six of 10 meetings with Murray, believes Vallverdu's insight into his former charge's game and tendencies will be valuable.

"Definitely it might be an advantage for us, but that's how it is," Berdych said. "And what is more important is, again, to be prepared for that match, to be ready, to set up the plan, and try to execute them on the court. Really the preparation is exactly the same like for all my past opponents so far here."

Berdych has not dropped a set in the tournament and looked impressive snapping a 17-match losing streak to No. 3 Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.

Murray suggested his former coach's tactics could impact both sides of the court.

"We'll see how the match plays out and what the tactics are and stuff. But, you know, I also know what Dani thinks of Berdych's game because he's told me, so it works both ways," Murray said.
