Second Serve

Julia Goerges is the hottest player in tennis but she’s not overly excited about the fact that she has now won 15 WTA matches in a row dating back to last season after her 6-4, 6-4 win over Sofia Kenin on Day 1 of the Australian Open.

“It's just a number,” the hard-hitting German told reporters after her victory. “It's nice that it's going, but I'm just focusing from one round to the other and trying to put my performance there and trying to improve with every match I'm playing.”

Goerges put forth a stellar first-strike tennis display, hammering 14 aces and winning 29 of 32 first-serve points to defeat Kenin in 79 minutes. She hit 34 winners to just 8 for Kenin and never faced a break points.

Goerges was pleased with her serving and her ability to take time away from her opponent.

“I really had to take the ball away from her a little bit to get her moving a little bit away from the court, not just sitting there and having everything in her range,” she said. “I think I managed that pretty well, especially on my serve when I used my kick serve or my slice serve, to really get her out of the court to have an opening for the second ball.”

Goerges will face Alizé Cornet of France in the second round. The German has won all five previous battles with Cornet.
