Andy Murray expects pain to be part of gains he makes in his comeback from hip surgery.

Daniil Medvedev dispensed some suffering today. Deadlocked at 5-all, the fourth-seeded Medvedev reeled off six straight games bouncing Murray out of the Brisbane International, 7-5, 6-2.

The 31-year-old Murray, who walks with a slight limp nearly a year after undergoing hip surgery in Melbourne, said ongoing pain will be part of the recovery process.

"(I feel) okay, not perfect," Murray told the media in Brisbane. "But that was also the case yesterday as well. I'm not expecting to feel great all of the time. But okay, better than how I was feeling a few months ago when I was competing or playing back-to-back days."

Currently ranked No. 240, Murray is not entered in another event before the Australian Open, which begins on January 14th.

"The plan was to play here and Melbourne," Murray said. "I think that would still be the case. So we'll head to Melbourne in a few days and spend the week preparing."

Medvedev, who raced out to a 4-0 second set lead, slashed 16 aces, including an emphatic ace setting up a quarterfinal vs. fifth-seeded Milos Raonic.

The three-time Grand Slam champion concedes facing elite players exposes weaknesses, requiring him to make adjustments.

"As you play up the levels... if you're not serving as well or not moving as well, the better players exploit that," Murray said. "He is a top player and he is able to do that so I need to try to find a way of working out how to get around some of the things I struggle with now. And I'll try to do that."
