Second Serve

Gael Monfils is on fire.

The 29-year-old Frenchman continued his recent winning streak by using his speed and shotmaking once again - this time in Toronto.

Monfils faced off against the local favorite Milos Raonic in the Rogers Cup quarterfinals on Friday night. Raonic had the home crowd support, but Monfils proved the better player from start to finish.

Despite having the crowd against him, Monfils took care of his own serve throughout the match. Monfils, who broke Raonic in the opening set, fought off three break points later.

“I'm a guy (who’s) always pumped up,” Monfils said later about dealing with the crowd. “Any energy, I take it. Even if it's for me or not for me, I take it.”

The highlight moment of the match came late in the second set.

Raonic, desperate to force a third set, looked agitated on court in the eighth game as he committed error after error. That brought up 0-40 on his serve. It was then that Monfils scrambled all over the court before finally breaking Raonic to go up 5-4.

Monfils, who didn’t drop serve all night, eventually served out the solid win 6-4, 6-4.

The French veteran, having won the Washington D.C. event last week, is now into his second ATP 1000 semifinal of the year.

He will next face top seed Novak Djokovic who he has not beaten in 11 previous meetings.
