Second Serve

Two seeds failed to survive the Hamburg quarterfinals.

Renzo Olivo
survived with his face intact after the stunning self-preservation stab volley in the video above.

Olivo not only prevented facial trauma, he broke serve for 2-all in the final set with that slick stickwork.

Philipp Kohlschreiber often brings his best on home soil: Five of the veteran's seven career titles have come on German soil.

The 153rd-ranked Olivo saved two match points toppling the top-seeded Kohlschreiber, 1-6, 6-0, 7-5, to spoil the German's homecoming and advance to the German Open semifinals.

Kohlschreiber held match point at 5-3 in the decider then served for the semifinals at 5-4 holding a second match point. Olivo won four games in a row to close out his first trip to an ATP semifinal.

Olivo will face Pablo Cuevas in tomorrow's semifinals.

The third-seeded Cuevas cranked 12 aces and permitted just three points on his first serve defeating Paul-Henri Mathieu, 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Cuevas, who won back-to-back clay-court titles in Rio and Sao Paulo earlier this season, is playing for his third title of the year and sixth title overall. Cuevas was also runner-up to Steve Johnson the grass of Nottingham last month.

Seventh-seeded Martin Klizan takes on Stephane Robert in Saturday's second semifinal.

Robert upset eighth-seeded Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, in two hours, 28 minutes.

Klizan was a 6-4, 6-3 victor over Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
