Court Philippe Chatrier is in shambles, but fans of clay-court tennis don’t need to worry—yet. Roland Garros’ No.1 court is undergoing a dramatic facelift that will leave it transformed by the 2019 edition, with a roof added by 2020 (if you haven't read all about it, try this excellent piece by Chris Clarey of the New York Times). Workers began tearing up the site the moment that Rafael Nadal won his 11th French Open title in early June, and they’re currently going about the process of tearing down and rebuilding the stadium, so that it can handle the weight of the retractable roof that is scheduled to be installed after the 2019 event and before first ball in Paris in 2020.

It's a dirty job but someone has to do it. And it's all for a good cause. In a few years there will be a roof over the fabled court, and we'll be watching night sessions for the first time at Roland Garros.

Check below for some grim photographs of the stadium, which was originally built in 1928. And check back over the next ten months to keep track of the developments.
