Second Serve

Wimbledon, England—Poland’s Iga Swiatek became the fourth woman from her country to claim the Wimbledon Girls’ Singles title on Saturday, defeating Swiss qualifier Leonie Kung, 6-4, 6-2, in 72 minutes.

The unseeded 17-year-old joins Alexandra Olsza and the Radwanska sisters as past Wimbledon champions, topping off a run that saw her defeat top-seeded Whitney Osuigwe in the first round and fourth-seeded Wang Xinyu in the semis.

Swiatek missed seven months due to an ankle surgery but has since returned with a vengeance in 2018. She reached the semifinals at Roland Garros Girls Singles last month, falling to Caty McNally of the USA in the semis in three sets.

“I was scared that I will not do well because of the stress and the pressure,” she said. “But I felt great on court. My serve was really good. I played very fast balls, so I'm happy with that.”

Swiatek told reporters that she’s done playing juniors at the Slams after the final. She says she hopes to build her WTA ranking and start finding her way on the pro tour.

Next year she hopes to be back and competing in the Ladies’ Singles draw.

“I think I want to build a better WTA ranking and to play senior tournaments,” she said. “I hope I will do well next year in Wimbledon if I get a wild card to ladies singles. I can't wait.”
