Sloane: No Stopping Serena

Sloane Stephens is convinced Serena Williams will make major history.

Continuing her quest to equal 24-time Grand Slam champion Margaret Court's all-time major singles mark, Serena Williams plays her Wimbledon opener on Centre Court today.

Stephens, who owns Grand Slam wins over both Williams sisters, believes 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena will equal or break Court's mark.

Asked if she thinks Serena will make major history, Stephens replied "of course."

"I want her to just get it so we can all just stop talking about it," Stephens said after posting a 6-2, 6-4, triumph over Timea Bacsinszky in her Wimbledon opener. "C'mon, let's just go ahead and win another one. 'We'? As if I'm her sister, let's come on and do it. I think she's more than capable of doing it.

"Obviously the greatest player of our time. I say the greatest player in tennis history. I think she's more than capable of doing it. I think when she does, I think there will be a lot of celebrations, it will be great. I think just getting there..."

The 37-year-old Serena has contested Grand Slam finals in six of her last 10 major appearances, including runner-up results at the 2018 Wimbledon and US Open.

Stephens believes Williams will attain the major mark because "there is no stopping her."

"Obviously her having a tough time now, it means nothing," Stephens said. "Tennis, like I said, is so up and down, it literally makes no difference what happens now. The past is in the past. When she sets her mind to do whatever it is she is set to accomplish, I think there is no stopping her."
