World Team Tennis Results, Monday July 22, 2019:

Philadelphia Freedoms, 23 San Diego Aviators, 19
Springfield Lasers, 19 Orange County Breakers, 18
Washington Kastles, 23 Orlando Storm, 19

The Philadelphia Freedoms remained red-hot on Monday night, winning their seventh straight World Team Tennis contest in San Diego, 23-16 over the San Diego Aviators.

Former Top 10 American Coco Vandeweghe made her long awaited return to tennis with a victory over Philadelphia’s Taylor Townsend in women’s singles, but the Freedoms were too dominant elsewhere and were never really in trouble on Monday night at the Omni la Costa Resort and Spa.

Nevertheless there were good vibes for Vandeweghe.

“I’m very happy. That was my first live match I’ve played since December, and I’m really pumped to be back playing. Hopefully I’ll be well enough for the US Open,” Vandeweghe told WTT.com. “I didn’t know what was going to happen, how I was going to feel, how it was going to look, and I was very happy with how I played and it felt very comfortable for me out there.”

France’s Fabrice Martin won the mixed (with Raquel Atawo) and the doubles (with Adrian Mannarino) and Adrian Mannarino took the men’s singles over Darian King.

The Freedoms remain at the top of the standings at 7-1.

Springfield Keeps Pace

Anna Blinkova started the Springfield Lasers on the road to recovery on Monday night at Palisades Tennis Club and World No.181 Enrique Lopez Perez sealed the deal with an upset victory.

Blinkova won the final four games against Nicole Gibbs, pulling the Lasers within one, and Lopez Perez, who has never played an ATP-level match, followed that up with the clincher by defeating Steve Johnson 5-3.

The Lasers improve to 6-1 and remain just a half game back of the Freedoms ahead of Tuesday’s World Team Tennis action.

Kastles Get First Win

The Washington Kastles snapped a five-match losing streak and earned their first win of the season, 23-19 over the Orlando Storm. With Marta Kostyuk out with injury, Varvara Lepchenko defeated American teenager Whitney Osuigwe, 5-4(4) in a breaker that came down to the final point.

Yoshihito Nishioka came back from 1-4 down to defeat Evan King 5-4 and Bruno Soares and Kveta Peschke clinched the win with t 5-2 mixed doubles victory over Darija Jurak and Ken Skupski.

The Storm drop to 2-6 with the loss.
