Thiem: Plan To Play US Open

Dominic Thiem ruled Berlin last weekend and is eager to hit the Big Apple next month.

Fresh off defeating Jannik Sinner in the bett1 Aces final to capture his third exhibition title of the summer, Thiem said he plans to play next month's US Open and aims to arrive in New York City in mid August.

"[The US Open is] my next tournament I hope," Thiem told the media in Berlin. "It's still not 100 percent sure it will happen, but the plan is to go there in mid-August or late August."

World No. 1 players Novak Djokovic and Ash Barty, reigning US Open champion Rafael Nadal, Wimbledon winner Simona Halep, Kiki Bertens, Petra Kvitova and Nick Kyrgios are among the players who have expressed concerns about playing the Flushing Meadows major due to the ongoing Coronavirus in New York as well as the USTA's proposed safety protocol for the tournament.

However, Djokovic has been recently training on hard court leading to speculation he may play.

Defending Australian Open champion Djokovic survived a storm of shot-making from Dominic Thiem and mid-match dizziness fighting back for a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph in a gripping Australian Open final to capture his 17th career Grand Slam championship.

Thiem dropped to 0-3 in career Grand Slam finals, but may well be empowered to break through in New York, especially if Nadal and/or Djokovic do not play the US Open.
