Second Serve

Roger Federer will play his first tour-level tennis since Rome when he contests his second-round match at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart. The grass-court tournament, which switched from clay to grass last year, features 28-player draw headed by top-seeded Federer. Rafael Nadal won the title last year.

The Swiss maestro will face either Taylor Fritz or a qualifier in the second round after a bye. He could face 6th-seeded Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals if the seeds hold, and would face 3rd-seeded Dominic Thiem or 5th-seeded Feliciano Lopez if the seeds hold.

The World No. 3 and 17-time major champion has had an abbreviated season due to injury. He has gone 11-4 but has only played five tour-level matches since losing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Australian Open this January. Federer underwent surgery to a torn meniscus in his left knee, but has since picked up a back injury as well as dealing with an ill-timed flu.

Federer had his streak of 65 consecutive Grand Slams played snapped when he pulled out of Roland Garros this year.

Federer owns 15 titles on grass out of 21 finals. Last season he won the Halle title and lost in the Wimbledon final to Djokovic in four sets.

In an interesting first-rounder at Stuttgart, wild card Juan Martin del Potro will square off with Grigor Dimitrov. Main draw play begins on Monday in Stuttgart.
