Second Serve

They are the French firestarters.

Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia didn’t manage to get to the second week in the singles draw, but they have kept the party going on the doubles side of things. The pair of Fed Cup stalwarts came through with a rousing victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova and Margarita Gasparyan on Friday in front of a boisterous, chanting throng of fans on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

It’s not the first time that Garcia and Mladenovic have made noise in 2016. The pair carried a 15-match winning streak into the Rome quarterfinal before finally losing for the first time on the clay. They won titles in Charleston, Stuttgart and Madrid.

After splitting the first two sets on Friday, Garcia and Mladenovic broke open a tense affair with a break in the eighth game of the third set (see highlight above) and promptly served out the match to bring the crowd to a frenzy. It is the first Grand Slam final for the newly formed French pair, and they’ll face the all-Russian tandem of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final.

"It was an amazing atmosphere, the same as at the Fed Cup," said Garcia. "It was great to have the chance to play a semi-final at Roland-Garros on a big court. We lost the second set, but we came back stronger with the crowd's support. We will enjoy this for sure, but we remain focused. One more to go."

Makarova and Vesnina, the 2013 Roland Garros champions, needed just one hour and 20 minutes to beat the unseeded Czech pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, 6-4, 6-2.
