There Will Be a Santina Doubles Final After All in Paris

Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza lost out on their bid for a fourth consecutive Grand Slam doubles crown when they were upset by the Czech duo of Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krecjikova in the third round, but Team Santina will square off as opponents in a star-studded mixed doubles final on Friday. Hingis, paired with Leander Paes, and Mirza, paired with Ivan Dodig, each came through match tiebreaks in the semifinals on Thursday.

Hingis and Paes defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-3, 3-6, [10-7], while Mirza and Dodig took out Kristina Mladenovic and Pierre-Hugues Herbert, 4-6, 6-3, [12-10].

Both teams also completed their quarterfinal rounds earlier in the day.

If you add up the Grand Slam titles amassed by the four mixed doubles finalists you finally stop counting at 45. That’s 21 for Martina Hingis, 17 for Leander Paes, 6 for Sania Mirza and one for Ivan Dodig.

Hingis and Paes, unseeded, took three major titles in 2015, failing only to triumph at Roland Garros (they lost in the second round to Srebotnik and Tecau).

Paes and Hingis are each seeking to claim the Career Slam in mixed. It is the only major doubles title that is missing from their trophy cabinets.
