Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

24-year-old CoCo Vandeweghe may still be a raw, developing work in progress on the WTA Tour, but she is learning on the fly in Europe this summer. The hard-serving American is hoping that the experience of winning her second career title is met with a little bit more maturity than her first title, which came at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2014.

CoCo Power: Vandeweghe Claims Second Ricoh Open Title

“The last time I won this title, I went immediately to Wimbledon and beat Muguruza again,” Vandeweghe told WTA Insider Courtney Nguyen after defeating Kristina Mladenovic in the final on Sunday for her second title. “And then the next round it all hit me: ‘just won a title, I'm tired,’ and everything like that, and I wasn't able to nor did I have the experience to find it within myself to just manage through the match. That was my own fault.”

Vandeweghe says she thinks she’ll be able to take it more in stride this year as she continues on the road to Wimbledon with a first-round match with top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska on Tuesday at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

“I think this tournament is in a different place,” she said. “It's the first tournament of the grass court season, so there's two more tournaments ahead with Birmingham and Eastbourne. Who knows what will happen. But the big tournament you have to be ready for, that we're all building towards, is Wimbledon. That's what you have to focus on, how you're going to be best prepared for Wimbledon.”

Vandeweghe, who climbs to a career-high No. 32 in the WTA rankings on Monday, is hoping to match or exceed her quarterfinal performance at Wimbledon later this summer. It’s a tall order, but anybody who has witnessed Vandeweghe’s explosive game on grass knows that another deep run at Wimbledon is certainly within the realm of possibilities.

“Comparing the clay court tournaments to my grass court tournament season last year to this year, or even in previous years, there's just no comparison,” Vandeweghe said. “I excel on the grass.” Vandeweghe has gone 21-6 since the beginning of 2014 on grass, including her two titles at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. She has managed an impressive 7-3 record against the Top 40 in that time span.

Rankings Movers:

France’s Kristina Mladenovic climbs back inside the Top 30 with her final appearance at ‘s-Hertogenbosch. She rises three spots to No.29, just two shy of her career high… Vandeweghe rises 11 spots to tie her career-high of 32…Alison Riske jumped eight spots to No. 81 after reaching the Nottingham final... American Madison Brengle rose from 68 to 60 on the strength of a semifinal appearance in 's-Hertogenbosch.
