Mikhail Youzhny pulled the shot of the day at the Aegon Open in Nottingham, but it wasn’t enough to pull the Russian past hard-serving Gilles Muller.

The 8th-seeded world No.41 eased past Youzhny, 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 6-3 behind 19 aces and nine of 11 break points saved. The victory evens up Muller’s lifetime head-to-head with Youzhny at two apiece and sends the Luxembourg native into the quarterfinals where he’ll next face Alexandr Dolgopolov.

“Against a guy like Mikhail, who was making a lot of returns and playing well from the baseline, it was very tough, so I’m happy that I’m through,” Muller said.

Dolgopolov eased past Canada’s Frank Dancevic, 6-3, 7-5.

Top-seeded Kevin Anderson powered past Fernando Verdasco, 6-3, 7-6(6) to set up a quarterfinal with American Steve Johnson, while Marcos Baghdatis saved two match points against American Sam Querrey to set a quarterfinal clash with second-seeded Pablo Cuevas.

Plagued by injuries after a breakout 2015 that saw him make his Top 10 debut, Anderson has now won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

Andreas Seppi and Dudi Sela also reached the quarterfinals on Friday at Nottingham.
