Andre Agassi faced Roger Federer 11 times in their pro careers.

Agassi asserts Federer is more important to tennis now than ever before because he's creating history in front of our eyes.

“He’s played a long time, certainly longer than me and surpassed me as the oldest number one, and he deserves to hold all those accolades,” Agassi told Time Magazine.

“Watching him is watching history,” Agassi said of Federer. “You see it every time with the way he conducts himself—with the fans, with his peers, with the media."

The eight-time Grand Slam champion says Federer's brilliance is that he makes the exceptional appear effortless.

“I just have more appreciation than the average fan because he makes it look so easy and I actually think I know what it takes," Agassi said. "And it’s truly remarkable.”

Agassi won his first three meetings against Federer, including the 2002 Miami Open final.

The young Federer turned around his rivalry with Agassi in one stunning night in Houston.

Agassi broke when Federer served for the match at 5-4 then held a match point at 6-5 in the decisive set only to net a backhand return.

Federer fired a forehand to erase a second match point at 6-7, rallying for a gripping 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (7) triumph.

It was Federer's first win over Agassi. He never lost to the American, including crushing Agassi in the Tennis Masters Cup final a few days later.

Agassi also praised Serena Williams' comeback as inspiring.

“Seeing champions struggle and overcome adversity or difficulty, whatever that may be, is a pleasure," Agassi said. "Success or failure, I respect that fight and that commitment.”
