Halep: Younger Players More Courageous

Simona Halep breezed through one teen test to set up another.

The reigning Roland Garros champion thrashed 18-year-old Iga Swiatek,6-1, 6-0, in a 45-minute demolition.

Halep stretched her French Open winning streak to 11 matches setting up a quarterfinal clash vs. 17-year-old American Amanda Anisimova.

Bidding to be first woman to defend a Grand Slam title since Serena Williams did it at Wimbledon from 2015-2016, Halep will face a challenge from the hard-hitting Anisimova.

The Freehold, New Jersey native continued her inspired run to her first major quarterfinal reeling off seven straight games in crushing Spanish qualifier Aliona Bolsova, 6-3, 6-0, to reach her first major quarterfinal in her Roland Garros main-draw debut.

Former world No. 1 Halep said courage is the quality that distinguishes the younger generation.

"I think our generation, it was a little bit more shy, I can say," Halep said. "Now, this generation are more courage—they have more courage, and they fight with any other player in the top. So they don't have, like, thoughts about that they are under them."

The third-ranked Romanian owns a 27-8 record this season with two of those losses coming to 19-year-old Czech left-hander Marketa Vondrousova, who beat Halep in Rome and Indian Wells.

"So they have courage, and they go for it every match," Halep said of the younger players. "So I appreciate them. And also, it's good for tennis, because they see that the young players are in the top fast."
