Second Serve

With an epic weekend in the rearview (Merci Stan Wawrinka and Stefanos Tsitsipas) we now set our sights on completing the round of 16 at Roland Garros. The temperatures have dropped significantly in Paris but we’re hoping that the tennis is just beginning to heat up.

Here’s what we’ll be watching on Day 9.

Will Djokovic be tested?

Novak Djokovic has cruised through the first week, logging just 5:13 of court time to book his spot in the round of 16. Today he’ll face Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, who nearly matched that court time in his third-round victory over Borna Coric. Struff got past Coric in 4:22, and now we’re wondering if the strapping German will have anything left to push Djokovic on Chatrier today. It's a big ask...

Kenin Hopes to Back up Massive win

What does American Sonya Kenin have for an encore? We’ll find out on Day 9 as she goes against the crafty Ash Barty, first up on Court Philippe Chatrier.

We can expect tons of energy from the 20-year-old World No.35 but how will she match Barty’s well-rounded game? Barty, ranked eight, has proved that clay can be a surface that she can have success on. And as usual, she’s using her serve as a strong point. The Aussie has won 81 percent of her service games and she’s one of the best at using the shot as a way to get points started on her terms.

Barty has defeated Kenin twice in straight sets, including once on clay.

But the Queenslander knows that the talented—and feisty—Kenin is not one to be overlooked.

“Sonya is an incredible competitor,” she said on Saturday in Paris. “She really is. I got a little bit of a taste of that at Fed Cup earlier this year. And she certainly respects every opponent but doesn't play their reputation. She plays them just on the other side of the net, and that's one of her best attributes. So I think it's going to be an extremely tough match come Monday.”

Teen Dreams

17-year-old Amanda Anisimova and 18-year-old Iga Swiatek will look to make it three teenagers into the round of 16 on the women’s side in Paris. Anisimova certainly has a shot—she’ll be facing qualifier Aliona Bolsonova in a toss-up match. Things could prove to be a lot more difficult for Swiatek, who is facing defending champion Simona Halep.

Bon Bons

Juan Martin del Potro and Karen Khachanov will square off in what is sure to be a big-hitting battle on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Del Potro leads the head-to-head, 3-0… Fabio Fognini defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets en route to his biggest career title in Monte-Carlo this spring. Can he do it again on Monday to reach his second Roland Garros quarter-final?... Dominic Thiem will look to continue his march towards a potential semi-final with Novak Djokovic, but Gael Monfils—and 15,000 fans on Chatrier—will stand in his way today.
