During his 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov, Nick Kyrgios got in a little spat with umpire Cedric Mourier over an incident that occurred in the fourth game of Kyrgios’ victory. Kyrgios, frustrated after losing a point (while he was behind 3-0), swatted a ball into the crowd after it was tossed in his direction by one of the ball kids.

He was given a code violation for ball abuse as the crowd rained down boos on him.

During the next changeover, Kyrgios argued that the call was unfair. He went on to say that Rafael Nadal would have gotten away with the same thing (or something to that effect – see video below):

Kyrgios kept it clean for the remainder of the match and went on to claim an impressive victory over Kuznetsov to reach the quarterfinals on his Miami debut. Kyrgios is the first Aussie to reach the last eight at Miami since Lleyton Hewitt did so 14 years ago.

The 20-year-old reached a Masters 1000 quarterfinal for the first time, and continues to make progress in 2016, improving his record to 13-3. He will face Canada’s Milos Raonic in the quarterfinals.

Raonic pounded 11 aces in taking down Damir Dzhumhur on Tuesday, dropping just three games to advance in 54 minutes.

In the final match of the evening Kei Nishikori booked his quarterfinal slot with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spaniard will face Gael Monfils in the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals in the top half will feature top seed Novak Djokovic vs. Tomas Berdych and David Goffin vs. Gilles Simon. Djokovic is bidding for his 6th Miami title and 28th Masters 1000 title. He is also attempting to become the first player to achieve a Miami three-peat since Andre Agassi (2001-2003).
