One of tennis’ most cherished multi-gender gems is dead.

The Hopman Cup, Perth’s long-running team tennis event that featured both ATP and WTA stars, has had its contract terminated and will be replaced by the inaugural ATP Cup in Perth this January.

Tennis Australia is terminating its Hopman Cup contract with the ITF, which had been set to run through the 2022 event,” Tweeted Ben Rothenberg of the New York Times. “A popular and unique event just had one of its parents walk out on it, and now needs to to find a new home.”

The $21 million ATP Cup, a new 24-team men’s event that will be staged in three cities—Perth, Sydney and Brisbane—has the backing of Tennis Australia and the ATP’s top players. According to the West Australian there are plans rumored to be in the works to bring women’s tennis to Perth, but it will not happen in 2020.

The Hopman Cup was founded by Paul McNamee and Charlie Fancutt and debuted in 1989. Since then Perth has hosted some of the game’s greatest players. This January, the event made headlines worldwide as the first competitive meeting between Roger Federer and Serena Williams took place. Federer became the only player to win three Hopman Cups in 2019, and the event drew over 110,000 fans this season in eight days, the largest attendance in tournament history.
