Second Serve

Like any tried-and-true group of fans, Roger Federer's loyal supporters hate to see him lose. It’s a bummer, especially as the Swiss maestro approaches 34, and the end of his career gently approaches.

But last night at Madison Square Garden, even Federer’s most ardent supporters couldn’t help getting a kick out of the whooping this tiny kid put on their hero. Summoned to the court to play a point by Grigor Dimitrov, the precocious whizz proceeded to smack a topspin return off a lazy Federer serve (using Rafael Nadal's patented buggywhip finish, no less). When Federer worked his way into the net, the little man whacked a backhand right at him before torqueing this gorgeous forehand lob that Federer couldn’t (okay, didn’t bother to) track down.

Regardless, the young terror showed some real spunk under pressure. Not only did he not miss, he played with purpose.

Will we be watching the video tape of this moment ten years down the road, when this young boy is all grown up and playing on the ATP Tour? We wouldn’t be surprised…
