Guga: Nadal Is Not From This World

Rafael Nadal's clay-court record is so astounding, Gustavo Kuerten is starting to believe the King of Clay is not of this world.

Three-time Roland Garros champion Guga said he is so in awe of nine-time champion Rafa's Roland Garros record, he views Nadal as "a spaceship in the park."

"It's amazing, this," Kuerten told the media at the French Open today. "He's so strong on this. It's hard to do this. It's easy to talk about this stuff and to try to tell your player or friend, Oh, put this in your head; believe in yourself. But to do, it's really hard. I try to joke or make this spaceship, because he's not from this world. He's spaceship in the park somewhere."

Kuerten, who will present the Coupe des Mousquetaires trophy to the men's champion next Sunday, said when he handed Nadal the Roland Garros trophy after his four-set victory over Roger Federer in the 2007 final, he did not expect the decade-long dominance Rafa delivered.

The Brazilian said Nadal's inspired run of nine French Open titles in 10 years "will never happen again."

"Nadal? I didn't expect him to win that much, but perhaps not either him," Kuerten said. "Because it's really too much. Nine of ten years. I'm sure it will never happen again. It's impossible. So how can — if he would think this way would be amazing, but he lives this way. Perhaps he didn't think that much whether bet on expectations, but he live this way."

Informed of Kuerten's comments, a smiling Nadal provoked laughter from the media for reaffirming he is not an extraterrestrial sent from space to conquer clay.

"First of all, I am from this planet, I think," Nadal said. "Second thing, thanks to Guga for the words. Third thing, is true that is probably a tough record to beat. But at the same time, I tell you one thing: If I did, you know, somebody else can do it.
