Italian tennis fans said good-bye to Flavia Pennetta on Tuesday night in Rome as peers and legends showed up to pay tribute to the career of the 2015 U.S. Open champion.

There were plenty of tears shed as Pennetta and participants watched a lengthy video that featured praise from the likes of Elena Dementieva, Novak Djokovic, Roberta Vinci, Fabio Fognini, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Rafael Nadal and more. On court, Pennetta was presented with flowers from her fiancรฉ Fognini, while Francesca Schiavone and others made heartfelt speeches.

Pennetta, who became Italy’s first top-10 female singles player in 2009, won Grand Slam titles in both singles and doubles and became the first Italian to ever hold the No. 1 ranking when she claimed the top WTA doubles ranking in February of 2011.

She owns 11 WTA titles and achieved a career-high ranking of No. 6 in the world.

Social media was also involved in the celebration. Here are some of the choice posts that we’ve collected.
