The rise of Greek WTA star Maria Sakkari has been steady over the past few seasons. The 22-year-old came from outside of the Top 100 at Wimbledon last year to finish at No.52 in the world, and this week she’s locked in at a career-high No.39 in the world. And… in case you didn’t yet see the training video above—she’s putting in the hardest of yards in the gym. Simply put: the woman is a physical phenom!

Sakkari moved from Athens to Barcelona at the age of 18 to train, and she is clearly a motivated player, both in the weight room and on the court.

Sakkari’s mom is a former Top 50 player from Greece (Angeliki Kanellopoulou), and she is currently coached by 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson.

Things are beginning to come together for Sakkari, who has won her last two matches against the Top 10 (after dropping her first four) and reached the third round at three Grand Slams last year.

Along with 19-year-old ATP rising star Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sakkari is helping to put Greek tennis on the map.
