Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

By Chris Oddo | @TheFanChild | Sunday May 26, 2019

Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. Here’s what went down on Day 1 of #RG19, by the numbers.

1

Number of Roland Garros wins and Top 10 wins now owned by Anastasia Potapova. The Russian took out Angelique Kerber in decisive fashion 6-4 6-2 on Day 1.

25-5

GarbiΓ±e Muguruza’s record at Roland Garros after her 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Taylor Townsend on Day 1. The 2016 champion will face either Magdalena Rybarikova or Johanna Larsson in the second round.

42-46

Number of first-serve points won and played by Stefanos Tsitsipas on Day 1 against Maximilian Marterer. He did not face a break point and never lost more than two first-serve points in a set (2 in the first, 1 in the second, 1 in the third).

35

Number of years that have passed since the last time a player from Bolivia won a match at a Grand Slam. Hugo Dellien ended that run today and will move on to face Stefanos Tsitsipas in round two. He defeated Prajnesh Gunneswaran in round one—Dellien did not even own an ATP main draw win prior to this season.

4

The number of WTA players that can end up as the No.1-ranked player after the tournament. Angelique Kerber had a slim chance at reaching No.1 but those hopes ended quickly today when she was upended by Anastasia Potapova in round one. In her last 14 Grand Slam appearances Angelique Kerber has three Grand Slam titles and three Grand Slam first-round matches sprinkled in.

6

Number of consecutive wins notched by Karolina Pliskova. The Czech, seeded 2, eased past Madison Brengle 6-2 6-3. Six is not her longest winning streak of the season. Pliskova opened the season with a 10-match winning streak before falling to Naomi Osaka in the Australian Open semi-finals.

The number of consecutive defeats that Elina Svitolina had suffered prior to today’s straight sets win over Venus Williams. The No.9 seed has been struggling with a leg injury and had not picked up a victory since her quarter-final triumph over Marketa Vondrousova at Indian Wells.

66-16

Roger Federer’s career record at Roland Garros. The Swiss powered past Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets on Day 1. He is the second most winningest ATP player of all-time at Roland Garros, behind only Rafael Nadal’s 86 wins.

3

Number of times the Roland Garros women’s singles title has been won by a player not seeded in the Top 10. On the flip side, a Top-2 seed has won the Roland Garros women’s singles title 31 times.
