Wawrinka Won't Play Laver Cup

We won't see a reunion of the Roger and Stan show in September.

Stan Wawrinka told fans he's not playing the 2019 Laver Cup, set for September 20-22nd in Geneva.

Instead, Wawrinka will play the ATP event in St. Petersburg.

"No, I'm playing @Formula_TX," Wawrinka said in response to a fan's question during an Instagram Q & A.

Fans were hoping to see Wawrinka and buddy Roger Federer reprise their Olympic gold-medal doubles partnership for Team Europe.

Wawrinka's agent, Lawrence Frankopan, told Swiss publication Tages-Anzeiger, the world No. 34 wanted to play Laver Cup, but they could not reach an agreement with Laver Cup CEO Steve Zacks.

"It's a shame we did not find each other," Frankopan told the Swiss publication. "Stan wanted to play in Geneva, it made sense to him and he tried to make it work. The only problem was the lack of flexibility with which the Laver Cup commits the players."

It's reported Laver Cup pays players a sliding scale based on their ranking on the Monday after Roland Garros.

Since Wawrinka has been rebuilding his ranking after a couple of knee surgeries a few years back, his management team felt the Laver Cup offer was disrespectful given the 34-year-old Swiss has won three Grand Slam titles and some players ranked ahead of him have yet to contest a major final.

While we won't be seeing a Roger and Stan reunion, Federer will reprise his partnership with king of clay Rafael Nadal for Team Europe, which is captained by Bjorn Borg. The 2019 Laver Cup is sold out.

"I can't wait," Federer said during the event's media launch in Geneva. "We talked about it in Melbourne, we talked about how excited he (Nadal) was and me too that we're going to be on the same team again.

"We don't know the opponents' team quite yet, it's a good thing Rafa is going to be on my team, and it's on home soil for me in Switzerland, it's indoors, I like indoors."
