What to Watch on Day 1 of Roland Garros
Day 1 of Roland Garros is in the books and Day 2 is nearly upon us. Here’s what we’ll be watching:
Full Day 2 OOP Here
The Big Boys
We saw
Roger Federer
and
Stefanos Tsitsipas
on Day 1, and both players were magnificent in their debuts. On Monday in Paris we will see Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on Court 2, plus
Dominic Thiem
on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Djokovic’s opener with the talented
Hubert Hurkacz
has the potential to be interesting, while Nadal (v. Yannick Hanfmann) and Thiem (v. Tommy Paul) can expect to be more dominant. Either way we’ll all be watching the form of all three players closely, to see if we can garner any clues about potential title hopes of all three.
Bonjour Serena
Serena Williams
opens her bid for a fourth Roland Garros title with a first round match with
Vitalia Diatchenko
of Russia. It will be interesting to see Williams play on clay for the first time since her third-round victory at Roland Garros last season (she pulled out of the tournament before her next match) and we’ll all be watching the movement of the 37-year-old as we attempt to gauge whether or not she might be fit enough to make a deep run in Paris. Problem is, Diatchenko may not have the game to put Williams to the test so any intel we gather on the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s fitness isn’t likely to be enough.
Garin is back
One of the most impressive stories of 2019 on the ATP side has been
Christian Garin
of Chile. The 22-year-old has gone 19-6 on the clay and won a title in Houston and reached another two finals in Sao Paulo and Munich.
Garin will be facing American
Reilly Opelka
on Court No.9.
We’ll also be watching Denis Shapovalov v Jan Lennard Struff on Court 7, and we’ll continue to monitor the fine play on clay of Great Britian’s Johanna Konta on clay—she faces Antonia Lottner of Germany in Round 1.
