Outside of a few soccer stars and the new Pope, no Argentine celebrity is more well known than Juan Martin Del Potro.

That fame has its price, and Del Potro took a stand against earlier this week against what he believes unfair criticism by publicly announcing he will not take a spot on the country's Davis Cup team when it takes on Italy next January in the world group first round.

"I'm tired of being invited by email or messages and being pressured at the same time through certain media with stories about whether or not I'll play the Davis Cup, trying to make me look bad to public opinion," Del Potro said. "It seems to me a hypocritical two-faced stance, the same as last year when any reply or non-reply was quickly known to some journalists."

The above quotes were part of a message Del Potro sent to Arturo Grimaldi, president of the AAT and Argentine Davis Cup team captain Martin Jaite.

Argentina is a four-time Davis Cup finalist. The team will also be without David Nalbandian, who retired in October. Del Potro is currently ranked No. 5 in the world, and opted out of the team's semifinal loss to the Czech Republic this September in order to focus on the ATP Tour.

Winner of the 2009 US Open, Del Potro suffered injuries that caused him to miss almost the entire 2010 season and some of 2011. He built himself back into a Top 10 player in 2012 and reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2013.
