Rafael Nadal is set to open a new tennis academy in his hometown of Manacor, Mallorca in 2016. He held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday in which he packed up the contents of a time capsule and buried them underneath the ground.

“It’s a very special moment,” said Nadal. “Sports, tennis, and sports life in general have been my passion all my life since I was a kid. And sport, in this case tennis, has given me a lot, so this is my way to give back to the kids.”

Nadal says he hopes to start with a summer camp in 2016. He also said that he is close to beginning his preparations for the 2015 season.

“I am almost 100 percent recovered from my appendicitis operation, so in one week I am going to start my practices,” he said. I am very excited for that.”

Nadal says that he’s looking forward to 2015, probably more than usual, because his 2014 ended up being so complicated with injuries after Wimbledon. Nadal is set to begin his season in Abu Dhabi on January 1.
