Second Serve

During today’s second doubles match at the ATP World Tour Finals in London, the need for instant replay once again reared its ugly head as a controversial moment ran its course with a counter-productive solution eventually occurring. Watch as Pierre-Hugues Herbert gets credit for a volley that actually bounced off the court before going over the net during this point early in the match tiebreak.

Ivan Dodig saw it clearly from his end and appealed to the umpire to give his team the point, but he was denied. It’s not clear if Herbert knew his shot hit the court but it’s not really important. What is important is that looking at the replay would have decided the matter in a matter of seconds. The point should have went to Dodig and Melo.

This incident is just one of many that have made an organic argument for instant replay this season. Victoria Azarenka and many commentators urged for an instant replay system to be put in place after a controversial call at the French Open, and there have been many similar instances.

Dodig and Melo took the set, and went on to take the match, 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-7.
