Serena Williams made a stunning statement in her return to New York City.

The world No. 1 cut a striking figure in a semi-sheer black gown for her appearance at Glamour's 25th Women of the Year awards at Carnegie Hall.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion joined her former Fed Cup captain, Hall of Famer Billie Jean King, on stage in a reunion of former Glamour Women of the Year honorees.

Serena said women can empower each other.

"The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another," Serena said. "We should raise each other up. Make sure you're very courageous: be strong, be extremely kind, and above all be humble."

King stressed the importance of self-identity.

"Don't let anyone define you; you define yourself," King said. "Lift up, learn, lean in, and be inclusive."
