Australian Open Ups Winner Prize Money to $3 Million

Once again, players will get a raise down under.

Australian Open officials announced a 10 percent increase in winner prize money for the upcoming 2015 Grand Slam in Melbourne.

ATP: Nadal Will Play in Shanghai Despite Illness

Men's and Women's title winners will each receive a prize money check for $3 million dollars next January. Tennis Australia will announce in coming weeks the specific breakdown of the overall $36.3 million total prize purse per round.

The prize money boost continues a recent trend among all four of the sport's majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open, in announcing prize money increases during the last several years.

At the event site itself, the new Margaret Court Arena was revealed after an extensive renovation and upgrade. The court, named in honor of Australia's greatest winning female champion, features a retractable roof. Margaret Court Arena will now become the second feature court at the tournament taking over from Hisense Arena.

Former champions Stefan Edberg and Martina Navratilova will present the winner's trophies during the respective 2015 final ceremonies.
