Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Gael Monfils has been out for the last six weeks due to a knee injury, and for those who like their tennis rough and tumble and wildly imaginative, this is not good news. But La Monf was back in fresh-faced form on Tuesday at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris, exacting a bit of revenge over Joao Sousa for his last loss (suffered at Metz in mid-September) and in the process sculpting another epic installment of his perpetually running trick shot series, entitled “I’ll blow your mind and you know it’s coming.”

Heroes and Zeros: The Wild, The Weird and the Awesome Week that Was in Tennis

In the video above, the always playful Monfils almost teases Sousa, hitting what would be a put-away overhead for most sensible players right to the racquet of the 25-year-old Portugal native, so that he may continue to have the pleasure of toying with Sousa for a few more strokes.

In the end (and this doesn’t always happen), Monfils comes away with the point, and the match, 6-1, 6-4, in 76 minutes, to set up a second-round encounter with John Isner.

Nothing else really comes to mind but the word “allez!”
