Second Serve

Tennis fans know her simply as “The Ninja,” and, most agree, to know her is to love her. Love, as in we love watching her routinely pull off works of genius on the tennis court. Today, Agnieszka Radwanska was up to her usual tricks against Petra Kvitova in Singapore during the pair’s opening match at the WTA Finals.

Singapore, Day 2: Wozniacki Surges Past Sharapova | Radwanska Soars to Top of Standings

Radwanska, normally frazzled by Kvitova’s massive ground game and puzzling leftiness, took the upper hand today by throwing an assortment of lobs, droppers, running angles and more –basically tennis’s version of the kitchen sink – at her opponent.

None was prettier than this running backspin lob that Radwanska threw up in the second set (complete with the body English to ensure that the ball dropped inside the baseline, an essential ingredient to say the least).

Commentator Katrina Adams summed it up nicely, saying “Amazing how well Aga can control the ball on the dead run with such touch.”

Radwanska notched the 6-2, 6-3 win for just her second career win over Kvitova in seven matches, and moves to the top of the white group’s standings after the first day of play.
