Djokovic Says Krygios Needs Wisdom of Aussie Greats

Novak Djokovic may see something of his younger, then brasher self in rising Australian talent Nick Kyrgios. But the reigning World No. 1 definitely feels Kyrgios needs to learn more lessons from past greats if he wants to achieve his full potential.

Shanghai: Djokovic Defeats Lopez to Reach Quarters

Speaking to The Age, Djokovic talked about the Aussie hopeful after the World No.1 easily defeated Martin Klizan at this week's Shanghai Masters event. Though Kyrgios himself lost to Japan's Kei Nishikori, Djokovic sees the upside in the 20-year-old Australian's game.

"There is no doubt that he has the potential to be a top player. He has won against some top players. He is still very young. Has a big serve, big game," Djokovic said about Kyrgios. "He's confident on the court. I think that's from one side good. But he can get carried away a little bit because he's not able to sustain his concentration all the way till the end."

Kyrgios is currently dealing with a potential 28-day suspension ban based on his now infamous incident with Stan Wawrinka earlier this year in Montreal. Yet, Kyrgios has recently been cited with code violations in three consecutive matches.

Djokovic feels Kyrgios should learn not only from his wins but from his fellow countrymen who have achieved even greater success in their careers.

"I think Nick has to learn from these kind of matches, listen to the advices of the more experienced people, especially from his country, Pat Rafter, Rod Laver, all the greats that have made the history of this sport. I'm sure they know, they understand the kind of mental challenges he's facing. They understand what it takes. He needs to try to really work on it, getting mentally stronger."

Djokovic reached the Shanghai quarterfinals on Thursday after a straight sets win against Feliciano Lopez.
