Kerber displays immense heart, admirable tenacity, leg strength, lateral quickness and—at the moment she most desperately needs it—sublime shotmaking. She needed 110 percent on this point and she gave it, finally finishing off with a dipping backhand pass that was so perfect that the long-armed Muguruza couldn’t even get a touch.

Garbine got the well-deserved straight-sets win in Singapore on Wednesday night, but full credit goes to Kerber for battling her heart out on this match and all match long.
