Andy Murray got by his Davis Cup teammate Kyle Edmund on Friday in Beijing, but he had to grapple with the 21-year-old for extended periods to get past him on Friday.

Murray, who won his tour-leading 58th match of the season and improved to 2-0 against Edmund, says that Kyle is coming along and could be a force on tour in not too long. “I know how good he is and the sort of power that he has on the court, because I practice with him so much,” said Murray. “I knew it was going to be a hard match today. He had come through qualifying and had a good win in the last round against [Roberto Bautista Agut]. He’s playing really well and he’ll be up at the top of the game soon.

“The first set was obviously very tough and then down an early break in the second—it could have gone either way,” said Murray.

Murray says that Edmund’s blazing forehand is going to be a real weapon on tour. “He generates a lot of power on the forehand side and it’s one of the bigger weapons in tennis just now and that will continue to develop over the next few years,” he said. “he more matches he plays in the biggest tournaments against the best players, he’s going to learn to use that shot more and more—yeah, it’s a big weapon.”
